Several years ago, the Louisiana Tech University Foundation established the McCann Society, a special society for those who make planned gifts to the Foundation. A bequest in a will, a charitable remainder trust, an insurance policy, or a gift annuity -- all are examples of planned gifts administered by the Foundation.

Those who notify the Foundation of their planned gift automatically become a member of the McCann Society, and each member receives a beautiful pewter Jefferson Cup as a token of appreciation.

The society is named in honor of Melvin "Mac" McCann, one of Tech's most generous supporters. Mac entered Tech in 1936 and worked his way through school as a teacher at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Ruston. His struggle to afford college inspired him to help the students of today and tomorrow. After retiring from a career in the Marines and the U.S. Postal Service he established a charitable remainder trust with his life's savings -- one million dollars.

The proceeds of the trust provide scholarships for students who wouldn't otherwise be able to obtain an education. Said McCann about his gift, "I know I had a hard time getting through school. I had to work the whole time I was there. I'm sincerely glad to contribute to the welfare of education and to scholarships."
