Cash -- Cash, usually in the form of a check, is the most common type of gift to the Tech Foundation. Cash contributions are generally tax deductible when you itemize deductions on your return.
Checks must be payable to Louisiana Tech University Foundation (the word "Foundation" must be included). Indicate the purpose of your gift on the check or in a cover letter if you do not have a response card.
Gifts to the Tech Foundation can also be made with a credit card. On-line gifts can now be made through the Annual Fund.
Securities -- Gifts of securities, such as stocks and bonds, afford a means to make meaningful gifts that can result in extra tax savings. If you have owned the securities for more than one year, you can receive a charitable deduction equal to the full, fair market value of the asset. You pay no capital gains tax on the gift and neither does the Foundation. For individuals who make annual cash gifts to the Foundation, there may be advantages to making future gifts with appreciated securities. Individuals can make their gift by transferring stock, then use the cash (that they would have used to make the gift) to repurchase shares in the same company. They will then own the same stock with a new, higher cost basis.
Please contact the Foundation before you transfer securities to assure the transfer is executed properly and timely. Also consult your financial advisor for specific information about the tax deductibility of your gift.
